3 Important Factors To Consider When Building A Wine Cellar

by Zoey Howell

If you want to add a wine cellar to your home this summer, the three most important factors to consider before starting construction of your wine cellar is location, temperature, and humidity.

#1 Location

The most important location when you want to build a wine cellar is where you build the wine cellar. When you choose a location for your wine cellar, you want to choose a location that will not be exposed to direct sunlight at all. The lack of direct sunlight in basements is one of the main reasons that many wine cellars are located inside of basements.

Light can be damaging to your wine bottles. Light waves can break down the molecules inside of your wine that gives your wine its unique flavor. This is a low risk, but a risk that should be taken seriously. You also don't want direct sunlight heating up your wine bottles; it can interfere with keeping your wine at the right temperature.

#2 Temperature

The second most important consideration is the temperature of your wine cellar. You want to keep your wine cellar nice and cool. If your wine cellar is located in the basement, it should naturally stay a little cooler.

However, if the area where you are putting your wine cellar is not that cool naturally, you are going to want to set-up a self-containing air conditioning system so that you can keep that specific area at the right temperature throughout the year. This system needs to be independent of your whole-home air system.

#3 Humidity

Finally, you need to be able to control the humidity in your wine cellar. If the humidity gets too high, mold will grow on your wine corks, ruining your wine. If the humidity gets too low, that can cause the cork to dry out and pop out of the bottle, spilling and spoiling the wine. You need to keep the humidity of the wine cellar within a set range.

You are going to want to have a system in place to measure and control the humidity in the wine cellar. You may need to install a humidifier in your wine cellar to keep the humidity at the right level.

When building a wine cellar, you need to choose a location where the wine will not be exposed to direct sunlight. You also need to make sure that you can control the temperature and humidity within the right range for your wine cellar. Controlling these elements will ensure that your wine cellar is able to protect the integrity of your wine collection.
